Famous Couple Eddie Valiant & Roger Rabbit- My Process

Enjoy looking at my messy sketches BUT the end product always ends up clean and ready for publishing.

Process

My goal was I wanted to capture both Eddie Valiant's and Roger Rabbits’ personalities at first glance. The challenge I had was trying to give the representation of whom they were without making it too obvious. This movie is a cult classic so I didn’t want to make it too easy. I knew I wanted to make Eddie Valiants representation something to do with a private detective so I explored drawing a trench coat or his hat. For Roger Rabbit I did explorations using his famous polka dot bow tie or carrots.

I then realized that I was getting stuck on the idea of trying to capture Rogger Rabbits’ fun-loving personality. I remembered that this movie is a mystery of who framed Roger of murder. I then decided to go with the idea of handcuffs for Roger considering in the film he gets handcuffed with Eddie and he is running fugitive and a lamp pointing down at the handcuffs for Eddie Valiant because he is a detective.

Color Palette & Typography

One of the requirements was to use the color orange somewhere in my design to represent the Penguin Series. I chose for the background of the book to be black because I wanted it to look mysterious. In contrast to the black, I selected a bright yellow to be as bright as Roger’s personality.

The typeface I decided to go with was  Capital - Demibold Capitals and Mostra Nuova- Light. The choice of the typeface was to emulate the Art deco time period. I wanted the viewer to see the typeface and get a sense of old Hollywood.
